Lake Ethel
Central CascadesBest Jul–Sep
Steep forest climb to a Chiwaukum Mountains lake, currently complicated by a private property access dispute.
About This Trail
Lake Ethel has been a gateway to the Chiwaukum Mountains from the north side for years, but a private development (Alpine Lakes Mountain Club) has complicated access significantly. The traditional trail route passes through private property between miles 2 and 3, where construction and excavation have disrupted the path. Recent trip reports describe detours along Forest Road 6930 to bypass the blocked section, and some hikers report the situation changing visit to visit.
When accessible, the trail climbs steeply through forest via many switchbacks from Gill Creek Road at 2,400 feet to about 3,800 feet, where views open toward Nason Ridge. Gill Creek runs heavy with snowmelt in early summer. Beyond the viewpoint, the route passes through a logged clearing with panoramic views of Mount Mastiff before reaching the lake at 4,040 feet. Old-growth forest, wildflowers, and fall color highlight the lower sections.
Before planning a trip here, check the most recent trip reports carefully. The access situation has been in flux since at least 2023, and the Forest Service has been urged to establish an alternative trailhead and reroute around the private property. As of the latest reports, the trail may still require navigating around the development.
