Lake Elizabeth
Central CascadesBest Jun–Oct
A tiny mountain lake tucked up the Money Creek valley that rewards anyone willing to brave a rough road and some creative route-finding.
About This Trail
Lake Elizabeth sits at 2,890 feet in the Money Creek drainage between Baring and Skykomish. The lake itself is small, quiet, and ringed by forest with a handful of established campsites along the shore. On a calm day the reflections are worth the trouble it takes to get there.
And there is trouble. The access road up Money Creek is rough, potholed, and sometimes impassable without high clearance. The trail has not seen regular maintenance in over a decade. Expect blowdowns across the path, brushy sections, a boggy stretch near the lake, and at least one bridge that trip reports consistently describe as rotten and slippery. The loop around the lake is short but requires attention. Going counterclockwise puts the diciest creek crossing first, while clockwise saves it for the return.
This is not a trail for folks expecting groomed paths and clear signage. It is for people who like poking around off the beaten track and do not mind scrambling over logs. The lake stays snow-free by mid-June most years, but road access can remain blocked into early summer. No pass required at the trailhead.

Safety & Considerations

Persistent Hazards
- Rotten, slippery bridges over Money Creek
- Numerous blowdowns across trail
- Rough unmaintained access road requiring high clearance
- Brushy, overgrown sections with poor trail visibility
Getting There
Small pulloff at the trailhead at the end of Money Creek Road (NF 6420). No pass required. The road is rough for the last several miles. High clearance strongly recommended; 4WD helpful in wet conditions.
From Highway 2 near Baring, turn south at the Money Creek Campground signs onto Old Cascade Highway/NF 6420. After 1.1 miles turn right onto Miller River Road, then take the next right onto Money Creek Road. Follow it 6.8 miles to the trailhead. Last few miles are rough gravel.
Anytime during dry season. The loop takes under an hour but allow extra time for route-finding around blowdowns. Check recent trip reports for road conditions before driving out.
Recent Reports
Have driven past Money Creek on Hwy 2 so many times, but never explored up valley, set out to explore Crater Lake, Lake Elizabeth, and the Damon and Pythias mine entry. Didn't find any money, but could have laundered some, due to the drenching I got from the wet bush/mist, haha.
We arrived at the trailhead, and it was dry and well-marked. We started going to the right.
First third of this short hike was great! Beautiful, with established campsites near the lake.
