About This Trail

Jove Peak (6,007 feet) is the higher and harder neighbor to Union Peak, reached by continuing along the Nason Ridge from Union's summit. There is no maintained trail to either peak. The route follows a faint climbers' path along the ridgeline that varies from a couple hundred feet wide to a true knife edge. Red blazes near Union Peak and better blazing between Union and Jove provide intermittent navigation, but the ridge itself is the route.

Most parties combine Union and Jove as a long day from the Smith Brook trailhead area near Stevens Pass. Winter ascents are popular with experienced mountaineers, using snowshoes or crampons on the steep slopes up to Union before traversing to Jove. The southeastern slopes are avalanche-prone with cornices forming on the northeast and southeast faces, making avalanche assessment critical in snow season. Trip reports consistently describe winter attempts as among the hardest day climbs near Stevens Pass.

Summer brings easier travel but still requires solid routefinding skills. The ridgeline between peaks offers a beautifully framed view of Mount Rainier to the south. The junction of Smith Brook Trail and the PCT confuses many hikers, so bring a map and know which trail you want before you reach it.

Parking

Park near Smith Brook trailhead area off Highway 2 east of Stevens Pass. No pass required.

Approach

Most approaches start from the Smith Brook area near Stevens Pass, climbing to Union Peak first before traversing the ridge to Jove. The climbers' trail is intermittently blazed. Stay on the ridgeline when in doubt. In winter, assess avalanche conditions on the steep southeastern slopes carefully.

Timing

Early start essential, especially for the Union-Jove combo. Winter parties should target first light. Summer ascents still benefit from a dawn start for the long day.
