Josephine Lake
Central CascadesBest Jul–Sep
PCT day hike from Stevens Pass to a popular alpine lake with wildflower meadows and marmot colonies.
About This Trail
Josephine Lake is the classic PCT day hike from Stevens Pass, following the trail south for 5.2 miles through ski area terrain, subalpine forest, and rocky slopes. The first two miles climb 1,000 feet across the ski area's open runs, where wildflower meadows erupt in July and marmots whistle from the talus. After cresting the ridge, the trail dips through a saddle, passes Lake Susan Jane, and then descends the final half-mile to Josephine Lake on the Icicle Creek Trail.
The lake occupies a basin at 5,150 feet with established campsites and reliable water. PCT thru-hikers pass through regularly from late July onward, and the camping areas can feel busy on summer weekends. An overlook 300 feet above the lake on the PCT provides a bird's-eye view of the basin before you drop in.
This hike also serves as the front door to deeper wilderness. The Icicle Creek Trail continues south past Josephine toward the Chain Lakes, making this a natural first-night camp for multi-day trips. The trail is well-maintained on the PCT sections but has had blowdown reported on the Icicle Creek connector in recent seasons.
