About This Trail

Index Town Wall is an unofficial, unmaintained trail that climbs the granite wall looming above the town of Index on Highway 2. The route is short, steep, and extremely eroded, gaining significant elevation in minimal distance. It is primarily a climber's approach trail, though hikers have adopted it for the views from the ledge and bell at the top. Route-finding is required, and cliffy drop-offs line portions of the path.

The views from the upper reaches look out over the Skykomish River valley, the town of Index below, and the surrounding peaks. Trip reports compare the steepness to Mailbox Peak and Minotaur Lake. The trail works surprisingly well in rain since it drains fast on the granite, and the low elevation means it is accessible almost year-round.

WTA officially recommends seeking other trails in the area due to the erosion, unofficial status, and safety concerns. No agency maintains this route, and the heavy foot traffic continues to degrade it. There is no parking pass required, and the trailhead is right off Highway 2 adjacent to the town of Index.

It's been about a year and a half since I have hiked the Wall but with the rain and avy forecast, today seemed like the perfect day to do so.   And other than a creepy moment at the end, I couldn't have asked for a better rainy day out.

Beautiful views and we were the only ones at the lookout at 1:30 PM today! Hard trail that goes straight up, akin to Mailbox or Minotaur Lake, but requires some route finding.
