Icicle Gorge Nature Loop
Central CascadesBest May–Nov
A flat, shaded loop along Icicle Creek through old forest with interpretive signs, birdsong, and the sound of rushing water the whole way.
About This Trail
The Icicle Gorge Nature Loop follows both sides of Icicle Creek through a forest of cedar, fir, and hemlock in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. The trail is nearly flat, well-maintained, and threaded with six interpretive signs that explain the local ecology, from the cedar swamp sections to the geology of the gorge. Bridges cross Trout Creek, Jack Creek, and Boggy Creek, connecting the two halves of the loop.
This is a "go slow and pay attention" kind of hike. Pileated woodpeckers hammer in the big snags. Chipmunks and squirrels work the forest floor. The gorge itself is a narrow slot where the creek compresses and speeds up, carving through rock with real force. There are picnic benches scattered along the route, and the whole thing can be done in either direction. Counter-clockwise gives you the gorge section first.
The access road (Icicle Road / FR 7600) is paved for the first 12 miles out of Leavenworth, then turns to gravel for the last 3 miles. That gravel stretch can be rough, especially in spring, and it gets snowed in during winter. In late fall, the larch trees along the road and trail put on a good show. This trail closes effectively from December through April most years due to snow on the access road.

Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard
- Strong sun — sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses recommended
Persistent Hazards
- steep 3-8 foot dropoffs along creek edge in places
- gravel access road rough in spring and impassable in winter
Getting There
Northwest Forest Pass required. A $5 day pass is available at the trailhead kiosk. About 23 spaces in the lot. Vault toilet at trailhead.
From Leavenworth, head south on Icicle Road (FR 7600) for 15.4 miles. The pavement ends after 12.4 miles; the remaining 3 miles are gravel that can be washboarded. Turn left at the Icicle Gorge sign past the Chatter Creek Guard Station. The road is typically snowed in from December through April.
Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the full loop at a relaxed pace. No rush needed here. Combine with a visit to Leavenworth for a full day trip.
Recent Reports
got to the TH @ 10 am on Friday 5/22. lots of parking still available.
Road to Icicle Gorge Trail has a number of massive potholes that require you to drive on the opposite lane temporarily. Otherwise, road is okay to drive.
I drove about 15 miles of the Icicle Rd and found some trouble spots that I am reporting on. There are a couple of spots on the road that have some debris on the roadway interfering with two lanes but traffic can get by with minimal problems.
