Fish Creek
Central CascadesBest Jun–Sep
A steep, remote climb from Lake Chelan's shore to the Chelan Summit Trail, accessed only by ferry and rewarding solitude seekers.
About This Trail
Fish Creek is a bruiser. The trail connects the shore of Lake Chelan at Moore Point with the Chelan Summit Trail high above, gaining nearly 5,650 feet over 8.9 miles one-way. That grade is unrelenting, and the trail earns its "hard" rating honestly. Most people tackle this as a multi-day backpack rather than a day hike.
The lower section follows Fish Creek through forest recovering from wildfire, with balsamroot blooming across the slopes in spring. The trail crosses the North Fork of Fish Creek around 4,800 feet, which can hold snow into May. Above that crossing, the route pushes into open alpine terrain with views of Lake Chelan far below and the surrounding peaks. Marmots, pika, and the occasional bear call this drainage home.
Getting here requires the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan or Field's Point. Request a drop at Moore Point, as it is not a standard stop. Reserve your ferry spot well ahead of time in summer. There is a toilet at the trailhead but no other facilities. WTA work parties continue to clear fire and flood damage along the lower trail, and blowdowns are common in the upper reaches.

Safety & Considerations
Today's Hazard

Persistent Hazards
- blowdowns and brush on upper trail
- bear and cougar presence
- creek crossing at 4800 feet can be hazardous in early season
- fire and flood damage on lower trail
Getting There
No parking. Access is by the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan or Field's Point. Request a stop at Moore Point (not a scheduled stop). Reserve well in advance during summer.
From the Moore Point boat-in campground, follow the Chelan Lakeshore Trail briefly to the Fish Creek Trail junction, then turn uphill. The trail climbs steadily with no real flat stretches. The North Fork crossing at 4,800 feet is the key navigation point. Above it, the trail continues to the Chelan Summit Trail ridge.
Coordinate your ferry drop and pickup carefully. Most backpackers plan 2 to 3 days. Starting early helps on the climb since the lower slopes bake in afternoon sun. Check with the ferry service about Moore Point stops before booking.
