Erinswood
Central CascadesBest Year-round
A short, barrier-free loop through old-growth cedar and fern-draped forest along the North Fork Skykomish, perfect for a quick leg stretch near Index.
About This Trail
Erinswood is a half-mile loop through some of the nicest low-elevation forest along the Highway 2 corridor. The trail winds beneath towering Douglas fir and western red cedar, with sword ferns, thimbleberry, and vine maple filling in the understory. You will hear the North Fork Skykomish River the entire time, and the forest floor stays damp and green year-round.
The trail was designed with accessibility in mind, and the grade stays gentle throughout with only minor rises and dips. It passes through riparian, deciduous, and evergreen habitat in a remarkably short distance, which makes it a surprisingly rich nature walk for something you can finish in 20 minutes. Look for varied thrush in the understory and dippers along the creek.
This is a perfect pairing with Heybrook Ridge, which shares the same parking lot. Do Heybrook for the workout and views, then walk Erinswood to cool down through the old growth. The parking area is free and holds about 20 cars, but fills up on weekends thanks to Heybrook's popularity. No restroom facilities on site.
