About This Trail

When Icicle Road closes for winter, the road to the Eightmile and Stuart Lake trailheads becomes a scenic snowshoe corridor. The route follows Eightmile Creek Road through a snow-covered valley with views of the Stuart Range opening up as you gain elevation. It is straightforward navigation on a buried road, making it a good introductory snowshoe for folks who want winter scenery without routefinding challenges.

You can turn around at either the Eightmile Lake trailhead or push further to the Stuart Lake/Colchuck Lake trailhead. The distance is flexible, which makes this work for anything from a half-day outing to a longer winter trek. Some parties use this as the approach for winter camping trips into the Enchantments backcountry.

Check avalanche conditions before heading out. The road itself is generally low-angle, but trip reports note avalanche debris crossing the route in heavy snow years. Icicle Road closures can add extra road walking distance from the gate, so check current road status before you go. This is Leavenworth's backyard, so expect company on sunny winter weekends.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

Park at the Icicle Road gate or snow park, depending on where the road is plowed. Check current road status as the plowed distance varies through winter. No pass currently required but verify before you go.

Approach

From downtown Leavenworth, head west on Highway 2 for about a mile and turn left onto Icicle Road. Drive 8.3 miles to the junction with Eightmile Creek Road, or park at the gate if the road is closed earlier. The snowshoe begins wherever the plowed road ends.

Timing

Start early for the best snow conditions and to give yourself plenty of daylight. Winter days are short and the approach distance can be longer than expected if Icicle Road is gated further back.

We took a trip to Leavenworth for my birthday and we wanted to take a drive down icicle Creek road to see what the conditions were like. The snow has been plowed from that road till just passed eight mile Lake Road so we decided to do an impromptu snowshoe trek.

Snowshoed up eightmile road and toward the lake; turned around about 1. 5mi before where a recent (and not small) avalanche had buried the trail.
