About This Trail

Domke Mountain packs 3,500 feet of gain into 3.6 miles of steep switchbacks, all accessed by ferry or boat on Lake Chelan. The route starts from Refrigerator Harbor, follows the Domke Lake trail to a junction, then branches off on Trail 1280.1 for the sustained climb to the summit at 4,067 feet.

The 2015 Wolverine Fire burned through here hard. WTA volunteer crews re-routed sections and cleared the trail in 2019, 2023, and 2024, but trip reports consistently note overgrown conditions and tricky route-finding, especially above the Domke Mountain turnoff. The trail gets rougher as you gain elevation. What you get for the effort are wildflower meadows, views down to Domke Lake, and a panorama of Lake Chelan that few people ever see from this angle.

This is a committed outing. Between the ferry logistics, the relentless grade, and the trail conditions, Domke Mountain asks more of you than most day hikes in the region. Only three trip reports exist in the database, and every one mentions trail challenges. Come prepared with navigation tools, plenty of water, and realistic expectations about the tread.

Parking

No vehicle parking. Access by Lady of the Lake ferry to Lucerne or personal boat to Refrigerator Harbor. Federal dock permit required May through October ($5 day, $40 season). Northwest Forest Pass required.

Approach

Ferry or boat to Refrigerator Harbor on Lake Chelan. Follow Domke Lake Trail 1280 to the junction, then take Trail 1280.1 for the summit push. Map: Green Trails Lucerne No. 114.

Timing

Start early. The sustained climb and limited shade mean you want to finish the exposed upper sections before afternoon heat peaks. Factor in ferry return times when planning your turnaround.

Took our boat to Refrigerator Harbor and camped overnight. We wanted a bit of elevation for our hike and attempted Domke Mountain.

This reopening of the Domke Mountain trail was part of our WTA Volunteer Vacation. Our goal was to open up this trail after the fires a few years ago.
