About This Trail

Getting to Domke Lake is half the adventure. There is no road access. You ride the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan to Lucerne, or arrive by personal boat at Refrigerator Harbor. From the dock, a short walk east on the Railroad Creek Trail reaches the Domke Lake trailhead.

The trail climbs about 1,100 feet over 3.5 miles through terrain reshaped by the 2015 Wolverine Creek fire. Burned forest means limited shade and open views where dense timber once stood. The fire also destroyed the cabins that once stood at the lake. What remains is a quiet backcountry lake in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, bordered by mountains and home to chipmunks, bats, owls, and frogs. The lake sits at about 2,200 feet and makes a solid destination for beginning backpackers looking to ease into overnight trips.

Note that Railroad Creek Road is currently closed due to storm damage, which may affect access logistics. The trail itself has had blowdown issues reported over the years, and sections can be overgrown. A federal dock permit is required at Refrigerator Harbor from May through October. This is not a trail you stumble onto. It takes planning and a ferry schedule, but that barrier keeps the crowds away.

Getting There

Google MapsApple Maps
Parking

No vehicle parking at trailhead. Access by Lady of the Lake ferry to Lucerne or personal boat to Refrigerator Harbor. Federal dock permit required May 1 through October 31 ($5 day, $40 season).

Approach

Take the Lady of the Lake ferry from downtown Chelan to Lucerne. From the dock, walk east on Railroad Creek Trail about a quarter mile to the Domke Lake trailhead. Alternative: private boat to Refrigerator Harbor with federal dock permit.

Timing

Plan around the ferry schedule. The Lady of the Lake runs limited departures, so confirm times before committing. Early starts help avoid midday heat on the exposed fire-affected trail.

The trip report from June 2022 is fairly accurate. The trail up to Sid‘s tent area is in good shape.

Did a quick day hike from Lucern up to Domke Lake for some fishing with my 4 kids. There is little shade as the trees were burned out from the 2015 Wolverine fire.
