About This Trail

Deception Falls is a quick roadside stop on Highway 2 near Stevens Pass that punches well above its weight. The Tye River pours over a multi-tiered cascade and slams into a granite wall, making a hard 90-degree turn that sends spray across the viewing area. The whole thing takes about 15 minutes, but the force of the water and the tight rock chasm make it genuinely impressive, not just a leg-stretch.

An interpretive trail loops through old-growth forest with signs explaining the local ecology. The first 200 feet from the parking lot are paved but steep. An upper section leads to a bridge overlooking the falls from above. The lower loop trail has been closed since at least mid-2025 due to a bridge failure, so the route currently works as an out-and-back rather than a loop. Despite the closure, the main falls viewpoints remain accessible and worth the stop.

No pass or fee is required. A vault toilet and picnic tables sit at the trailhead. Parking fits about 20 cars. The site is generally open Memorial Day through Labor Day, though exact dates vary. This is the kind of place you pull over for on a pass drive and end up staying longer than planned.

I can't believe I'm writing a trip report for a nature trail on hwy 2, but the trail is actually delightful.   I've driven by it for years and scoffed at a falls under a freeway, but the loop trail is just fantastic.

Bridge is still out as of 8/5, but otherwise the trail is beautiful with plenty of great creek and waterfall views. There were other groups swimming and fishing in various spots.
