About This Trail

Deception Creek is one of the best low-elevation old-growth walks near Stevens Pass. The trail follows the creek upstream through towering Douglas fir and western red cedar draped in moss, crossing carved log bridges with handrails and passing a narrow chasm waterfall that makes a good turnaround for shorter outings. The forest floor is rich with trilliums in spring, rattlesnake orchids and pine drops in summer, and mushrooms scattered across the duff in fall. Huckleberries line the trail along Sawyer Creek, and bears know it.

The gentle grade makes this trail accessible, but the full 11-mile round trip still adds up. Most day hikers turn around at the waterfall or one of the early bridges. Backpackers use the trail as an approach to Deception Lakes, Deception Pass, and the broader PCT network via Sawyer Pass. Established campsites sit along the creek, and the sound of moving water follows you the entire way.

Recent storm damage has left blowdowns and minor washouts along the route, particularly around mile 3. A January 2026 report confirmed the trail to the old log bridge was mostly clear after December 2024 flooding, but conditions beyond that point are rougher. The trailhead parking lot was closed as of early April 2026. No pass is required, and there is no toilet at the trailhead.

Parking

Turn right onto Forest Road 6088 from Highway 2, eight miles past Skykomish. Narrow, brushy turnoff under a railroad trestle. Room for about 10 cars. No toilet. No parking pass required. Trailhead lot was reported closed in April 2026; check conditions and consider roadside parking.

Approach

Trail follows Deception Creek upstream with gentle grade. Carved log bridges cross the creek at several points. A waterfall in a narrow chasm makes a good turnaround for shorter hikes. Beyond mile 5, the trail connects toward Deception Lakes and Sawyer Pass for PCT access. Trail crew maintains this route regularly but blowdowns recur.

Timing

No rush needed for day hikes to the waterfall or bridges. The low elevation and tree cover mean this trail works well any time of day, even in summer heat. Backpackers heading to Deception Lakes should start early.
