Crater Lake
Central CascadesBest Jun–Oct
Short miners' trail to a quiet subalpine lake at the end of Money Creek Road.
About This Trail
Crater Lake hides at the end of the Money Creek Road, a short but rough approach that keeps most hikers driving past on Highway 2 without a second thought. The trail itself was built by miners and fishermen, and it still has that character: functional, direct, and unmaintained in the traditional sense. The tread is well-defined but expect wet meadow crossings, muddy patches, and brush encroachment in places.
The lake sits at 3,500 feet in a subalpine basin with small waterfalls feeding it from surrounding cliffs. A large wooded campsite at the outlet makes for a pleasant overnight, and the lakeshore is easy to explore with rocks and flat spots for sitting. Views from the basin look out over the Upper Tolt River valley.
Nearby Lake Elizabeth and the historic Damon and Pythias mine entry offer worthwhile side trips for those who want to extend the day. The access road is rough but passable in a Subaru or similar high-clearance vehicle. Expect to get soaked from wet brush if hiking after rain or in early morning dew.

Park at end of Money Creek Road. No pass required. No facilities.
From Monroe, take US 2 toward Skykomish. Turn right at Money Creek Campground onto Miller River Road. Continue about 7.3 miles to the road's end parking area. The road gets rougher the higher you go.
No early start needed. The hike is short and the trailhead rarely has parking pressure.
