About This Trail

Copper Creek wastes no time. The trail leaves Holden Village and climbs hard from the first step, punching through fire-scarred pine forest before breaking into open subalpine country within about a mile. The grade is relentless but the distance is short, so you gain the basin quickly if your legs are willing.

Copper Basin itself is a textbook glacial cirque: a rocky bowl ringed by craggy peaks with wildflower meadows carpeting the lower slopes through July and August. In late September and early October, the surrounding larches turn gold against early-season snow on the ridgelines. The setting feels remote and earned for the effort.

Be aware that a persistent avalanche chute crosses the upper trail and holds snow well into June. A slip there carries real consequences. Loose rock on the descent demands careful footwork, especially if your knees are already tired from the steep grade. The access road to Holden has potholes but remains passable for standard vehicles when the village is open.

Parking

No traditional parking. Holden Village is accessed via the Lady of the Lake ferry to Lucerne, then an 11-mile bus ride or walk on FR 8301. Trail departs directly from the village.

Approach

From Holden Village, the trail starts on the west side and climbs immediately. No flat warm-up. The route is straightforward with no junctions until the basin. Bring trekking poles for the rocky descent.

Timing

Morning starts are best to catch the basin in good light and avoid afternoon thunderstorms that build over the peaks. The round trip takes most people 3 to 5 hours depending on time spent in the basin.
