Chatter Creek
Central CascadesBest Jul–Oct
A relentless climb from Icicle Creek into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, with subalpine larch and gateway access to the Icicle Ridge network.
About This Trail
Chatter Creek is one of the steeper entries into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness from the Icicle Creek corridor. The first mile lulls you in with flat walking through vine maple, then the trail tilts upward and does not let off until the pass. The grade averages around 20 percent through thick ponderosa forest, eventually climbing into subalpine larch stands that put on a show in mid-October.
The trail connects to the Icicle Ridge Trail at 5.7 miles, opening up the Ladies Pass Loop and access to Lake Edna, the Chain Lakes, and the broader Icicle Ridge network. This connectivity makes Chatter Creek a key gateway for multi-day trips in the area. The pass itself sits at nearly 6,700 feet with views worth every foot of vertical.
Water is available at the footbridge crossing (mile 1), a reliable source at mile 2.3, and seasonal creeks at 2.6 and 3.8 miles. Forested campsites between miles 2 and 3 are the best options for overnights. The final mile is exposed, rocky, and shadeless. Snow and ice can linger on the north-facing upper section well into summer and reappear in early fall.

Chatter Creek Trailhead, about 15 miles from Leavenworth via Icicle Road and NF-7600. Room for approximately 20 vehicles. No facilities. No parking fee.
From Highway 2 at Leavenworth's traffic circle, take Icicle Road 8.4 miles, then NF-7600 for 6.5 miles on gravel. Turn right at Chatter Creek Trailhead parking lot. Self-issue wilderness permit at the trailhead, no fee.
Start early on hot days. The lower forest is shaded but the upper mile is brutal in afternoon sun. For larch season (mid-October), any start time works since temperatures are cooler.
