About This Trail

Blackbird Island sits right in the Wenatchee River, a short footbridge away from downtown Leavenworth. Cross over and the Bavarian village noise drops off fast. The loop trails wind through cottonwood groves along the riverbank, with interpretive signs covering the area's history, salmon runs, and resident bird species. The river is the main attraction here, running clear and cold with good views upstream toward the Cascades.

This works year-round, though winter brings packed snow and icy bridges that need careful footing. Spring and fall are the sweet spots. Salmon spawn in the river from late summer into fall, and the birding stays good through the seasons. The trails are flat, paved or packed gravel, and fully accessible for strollers and wheelchairs on the main paths.

It is not a wilderness experience by any stretch. You are walking distance from restaurants and parking in town. But that is the whole point. Pair it with a meal in Leavenworth or use it to stretch your legs on the drive over Highway 2. Expect company on weekends.

In town for a pop-up from my favorite barbecue slinger at the Grotto at Sleeping Lady and still nursing a few broken bones, I decided to do some urban hiking. I parked at Enchantment park and walked to Wenatchee River Institute and back.

Just a few steps across a bridge and you get away from the hustle and bustle of Leavenworth on an early spring weekend. There was packed snow in patches and some mud and puddles, but easy enough to navigate.
