About This Trail

Bald Eagle Mountain is a serious backcountry outing. The trail starts from the Quartz Creek trailhead and follows the creek on a gentle grade for the first four miles to Curry Gap, where a meadow campsite and reliable water make a natural first-night stop. From Curry Gap, the route switchbacks upward with Monte Cristo Peak and the surrounding massif growing in the viewfinder with every turn.

Beyond mile nine, you enter two large alpine meadows flanking June Mountain. The wildflowers in late July and August are exceptional. The trail connects to the Pacific Crest Trail at Dishpan Gap, opening up loop options via the North Fork Skykomish River Trail. Many hikers do exactly that: a two or three-day loop linking Bald Eagle, the PCT, and the N Fork Skykomish, often adding a side trip to Lake Sally Ann.

The access road is rough but passable for standard vehicles with care. Expect potholes and sharp rocks on the final stretch. There is a creek crossing around mile two that may require removing boots in high water, and avalanche chutes along the ridge section deserve attention in early season. This is not a trail you want to rush. Bring overnight gear and give it the time it deserves.

Parking

Shared parking area at end of FR 63. Northwest Forest Pass required. No toilet facilities. Access road is rough but passenger cars can make it with care.

Approach

From the west: Highway 2 to Index, turn at Sand Bar Tavern, proceed 13.8 miles to Beckler River Road junction, continue 2.5 miles on steep gravel. From the east: Highway 2 to Beckler River Road (FR 65), drive 12.5 miles to Jack Pass junction, descend 2.3 miles, right on FR 63 for 4.2 miles.

Timing

Plan as an overnight or multi-day trip. If day-hiking to Curry Gap (8 miles round trip), start early. For the full route, a relaxed two-night itinerary works best.

The Index-Galena road was in good shape, but the unpaved road had many large potholes and sharp rocks. Any vehicle should be able to make it with care.

I drove out to the North Fork Sauk River trailhead for an overnight loop hike.   The loop I did is a combo of the White Pass-Pilot Ridge trek and Craig Romano's Blue Lake Loop.

Got to the parking lot around 5:30pm on Friday. Hit the North Fork Skykomish Trail, at 6mi in there is a large camp, I called it a night there.
