Alpine Lookout
Central CascadesBest Jul–Oct
A bone-dry ridge walk through wildflower meadows to a fire lookout with Glacier Peak views.
About This Trail
The Mission Ridge trail to Alpine Lookout climbs aggressively for the first two miles, gaining two-thirds of its 2,600 feet of elevation through tight switchbacks in dry forest. Once on the ridge, the character shifts entirely. Rolling meadows stretch ahead, blanketed in lupine and paintbrush through July and August, with mountain goats often visible on the rocky slopes above.
The lookout itself sits at 6,235 feet and delivers a panoramic sweep from Lake Wenatchee to Glacier Peak to the Stuart Range. The fire lookout is still active, so treat the structure with respect. Views from the ridge approach are nearly as good as those from the summit, making the final miles a rolling reward rather than a slog.
This is a dry trail. One seasonal spring near the trailhead may or may not be running, and there is no water after that. Carry at least 3 liters on warm days. The access road (FR 6910) can be rough but is generally passable for standard vehicles. Motorcycle traffic has degraded some trail sections, particularly on the lower stretch. Fall colors in October are excellent, with larch and huckleberry painting the ridge gold and red.
